       PERICLES, PRINCE OF TYRE

     The birth of Princess Marina.

Thaisa shook with awful fear
For all that she was worth,
And then right there within the storm
The poor scared girl gave birth.

Her nurse caught up the baby
     And, as the infant cried,
     Upon that tossing, storm-wracked ship,
     Princess Thaisa died.

The nurse then took the baby girl
     To Pericles and said,
‘Here is your little girl, my Lord,
Your dear wife, though, is dead.’

     Pericles was overcome
     With dreadful pain and grief.
However much he cried and railed
     It gave him no relief.

And he cried out above the storm,
‘Ye Gods! Why do you give
     Such goodly gifts to mortals
And then not let them live.’
