       THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR

     Falstaff hiding from Mr. Ford.

‘You’ll have to hide,’ the ladies cried,
‘It’s all there is to do.
Get in this laundry basket here,
We’ll take good care of you.’

They stuffed him in the basket
     With dirty pants and socks,
     With greasy napkins, grubby ruffs
     Foul-smelling shirts and smocks.

     What a profound indignity
     For this vainglorious knight.
     They said, ‘It is imperative
That you keep out of sight.’

     Once Falstaff was well hidden
     With garments to his chin,
They fastened down the basket lid
     And called some servants in.

Two men arrived and Mrs. Ford
     In shrieking voice then cried,
     ‘Remove this smelly basket here.
     Please take the thing outside

‘And throw it in the River Thames,
I’ll have it here no more.’
     Falstaff in hiding, didn’t hear
What fate he had in store.

And so the two men carried
     The basket to the bank.
They threw it in the river, where
     It very quickly sank.
