The Wind in the Willows in Bite-Size Verse
Badger tells Toad off for his
reckless driving.
They heard the Badger’s angry voice,
They heard it rise and fall,
Although exactly what he said
They couldn’t tell at all.
Presently they heard the sobs
Of Toad in deep distress.
It seemed he now regretted
All this sad and sorry mess.
Eventually the Badger
Slowly opened up the door.
Then he solemnly came out,
And coaxed Toad with his paw.
Then, limp and quite dejected,
His face an ashen hue,
His cheeks all wet from crying,
Toad tottered into view.
‘Now, now,’ said Badger kindly
As he pointed to a chair,
‘Come on and be a good lad, Toad,
And sit down over there.
‘My friends, I’m pleased to tell you
Toad’s repented now at last,
He says he’s truly sorry
For his conduct in the past.
‘He says he’ll give up driving;
It’s completely understood,
I have his solemn promise,
This is final and for good.’
