Volume Three
HENRY THE SIXTH - PART 1
The beginning of the Wars of
the Roses.
Meanwhile back in England
The Earls are in dispute,
And squabbling over England’s crown
Is at the quarrel’s root.

From Earls who are of Lancaster
And those who are of York.

And picks a sweet, white rose;
He gazes at it longingly,
Then holds it to his nose.
‘This rose shall be the symbol
Of our royal quest,’ he said.
Vernon and Warwick copy him,
But others there pick red.
For Somerset and Suffolk
With eagerness then chose
For Henry’s house of Lancaster
A glowing crimson rose.
And so as all these different Earls
Placed flowers to their noses,
Their actions gave the title to
The sad Wars of the Roses.
